Office renovation power and data coordination checklist
Power and data points are where the renovation meets the IT setup. Get the locations wrong and desks end up with cables across the floor. Get the responsibility wrong and nobody owns the gap. This checklist helps you coordinate before the partitions go up.
Why coordinate before partitions go up
Record equipment and proposed point locations while the room and furniture layout is being agreed. Late changes can affect access to walls, floors or ceilings and may require a revised cable route or other work. The appropriate providers should confirm the method and sequence for the actual unit.
EMA states that electrical installation, alteration and addition of power points in commercial premises must be carried out or supervised by an appropriate Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW). That is not the renovation contractor's default scope, and it is not the IT provider's either. Name the responsible party for each trade before work starts.
EMA: engaging licensed workers
Point and location worksheet
Record the equipment and locations you need, then leave the technical specification and suitability checks to the appointed providers. The first row illustrates a briefing question, not a recommended number of sockets, circuit design or agreed division of work. Fill the remaining rows with your actual requirements.
| Location | What is needed | Existing provision | Responsible party | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meeting room — example only | Record actual screen, conferencing and user equipment | List known existing points; mark condition/suitability unknown until assessed | Name the electrical worker, IT provider and construction-interface owner after agreement | |

| Meeting / presentation room | ||||
| Pantry / shared equipment | ||||
| Network / server equipment | ||||
| Reception / future expansion |
Interfaces with the renovation
Ask each appointed provider how its work interfaces with the proposed partitions, ceiling and floor. Record the agreed handoff and access arrangements rather than assuming every contractor’s quotation includes the same tasks.
- Partitions: have the appointed providers confirm point positions, proposed routes and any access or openings before the wall details are agreed.
- Ceiling: record the services and maintenance access that the relevant providers need to assess.
- Floor: ask about existing services, proposed routes and access before deciding the floor scope.
- Existing services: identify what may stay, change or be removed, who assesses it and who is authorised to carry out the work.
Office partition specification
What this checklist does not cover
Use this as a requirements and responsibility record. It does not size electrical loads, choose cables, specify circuits or design a network. EMA’s licensed-worker requirement concerns electrical work; this guide does not treat all IT cabling as the same trade. Confirm the appointed providers, their scope and who coordinates the construction interfaces in writing.
Send the checklist to Omni Contractors
Omni’s published office-renovation scope includes partitions, ceilings, floor preparation and finishes. Send the floor plan, photographs and equipment-location brief to discuss those construction interfaces. Electrical and IT installation are not implied by this guide: confirm who is appointed for each specialist task and what the written renovation quotation includes.
Does an office renovation quotation automatically include power points?
Do not assume it does. Confirm the electrical scope and the appropriate Licensed Electrical Worker separately from the construction scope. EMA says electrical work should be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Electrical Worker.
Who should take responsibility for data cabling?
Name the appointed IT or network provider and confirm what it supplies, installs and tests. Separately record who is responsible for construction access or any proposed routes. A trade label alone does not settle the responsibility.
What if I need more points after the office renovation?
Ask the appointed providers to assess the new requirement and how access or cable routing would affect the completed space. It may involve changes to finishes or another route; this depends on the site and system. Record foreseeable expansion needs before agreeing the original scope.
Do electrical work and IT cabling have the same licensing requirements?
EMA’s guidance covers electrical work such as wiring alterations and additions to power points. This checklist does not extend that statement to every network cable. Ask the relevant providers to identify the actual work and applicable requirements, including the building’s rules.
